Three-Month Road Closure Planned Near Dalton-in-Furness
A rural road near Dalton-in-Furness is expected to close temporarily for up to three months while highway work takes place.
The closure will affect the unclassified U5131 road between Greystone Lane and Stone Barrow Lane.
Westmorland and Furness Council’s temporary traffic order comes into force on Monday, August 24, 2026. However, the road will only be closed when the relevant signs are displayed.
The council has not yet provided exact dates for the work. Residents and other road users are expected to receive further information nearer the time.
Which Road Will Be Closed?
The restriction will cover the U5131 from its junction with Greystone Lane. It will continue north-east until the road reaches Stone Barrow Lane.
All vehicle traffic will be prohibited from using the affected section while the closure is active.
The legal notice also covers pedestrians and cyclists. However, the council says a route will remain available for pedestrians and cyclists who dismount.
Diversion Route Confirmed
Drivers will be diverted along:
- Greystone Lane
- The C5032
- Stone Barrow Lane
Temporary signs will be placed in the area to guide motorists while the work is underway.
Drivers who regularly use the rural route should allow extra time and follow the signed diversion rather than attempting to pass through the closure.
Exact Dates Still to Be Announced
The legal order can remain available for up to 18 months. This does not mean the road will be closed for the full 18-month period.
The council expects restrictions linked to the wider order to be needed for around three months. Individual roads will only close when required and when traffic signs are in place.
No further details have been provided about the type of highway work planned for the U5131.
The Dalton closure forms part of a wider temporary order covering five roads in the Barrow and Furness area. Other locations include Roose Road Back Street, Lord Roberts Back Street on Walney and back streets near Ramsden Street and Whitehead Street.
