The 2026 Tour de Furness is set to take place on Sunday, June 28th, starting and ending at Furness Academy in Barrow.
This marks a change from previous years when the event began at Roose Sports and Social Club. Organised by the Rotary Club of Furness, the ride aims to raise funds for local charities.
Brian Boyd, the event organiser, highlighted that all participants will receive a commemorative medal, a certificate, and free refreshments upon completing the ride.
The event has a long history, now in its 31st year, and has raised over £500,000 for various local charities.
Main Beneficiary
This year, St Mary’s Hospice will be the primary beneficiary of the funds raised. However, riders are encouraged to support any charity of their choice, making the event meaningful for many.
Volunteer Support
The success of the Tour de Furness relies heavily on the support of local volunteers. These individuals represent various organisations and play a crucial role in ensuring the event runs smoothly.
Route Options
Cyclists can choose from four different routes, catering to all skill levels: 14, 28, 53, and 74 miles. The new 74-mile route includes parts of the 53-mile path and takes cyclists from Barrow to Coniston before looping back.
Challenges Ahead
For seasoned cyclists, the 74-mile route presents a significant challenge, featuring the steep Wrynose Pass, known for its difficulty and also included in the Fred Whitton Challenge.
Scenic Shorter Routes
The shorter routes of 14 and 28 miles offer a more relaxed experience, winding through the peaceful country lanes of the South Lakes. These paths provide a safe and scenic alternative to busier roads.
Refreshments and Timing
Participants can expect refreshments at various checkpoints along each route. Although the ride is not a race, times will be recorded for all cyclists, allowing them to track their performance.
