£2.6m investment to fund new children’s care homes in Cumbria
Plans to create new children’s care homes across north and West Cumbria have been backed by a £2.6 million investment.
The funding will be used to develop specialist residential homes aimed at supporting vulnerable young people within the county. Helping them stay closer to their communities and support networks.
Supporting children closer to home
The new homes are intended to reduce the need for children to be placed outside of Cumbria. Which can often disrupt education, relationships, and access to local services.
By expanding local provision, the project aims to ensure that more children receive care in familiar surroundings. Improving stability and long term outcomes.
Up to £2.6 million has been allocated for the initiative, with the homes expected to be developed in both north and West Cumbria.
Addressing rising demand
The investment comes amid increasing demand for children’s residential care placements, both locally and nationally.
Councils have faced growing pressure to find suitable placements. With limited availability often leading to higher costs and placements further away from home.
Creating additional care homes within Cumbria is expected to ease this pressure while also providing more consistent, tailored support for young people with complex needs.
Long-term benefits for communities
As well as supporting children, the new developments are likely to bring wider benefits to local communities, including job creation and strengthened local care services.
Keeping children within the area also allows for better coordination between social care teams, schools, and healthcare providers.
The project forms part of a broader effort to improve children’s services across Cumbria, ensuring that vulnerable young people receive the care and support they need in a safe and stable environment.
