£400,000 Fund to Support Employment in Barrow

Work and Health Fund has launched with a budget of £400,000 to support local residents in finding employment.

This initiative focuses on individuals with disabilities, long-term health conditions, and those facing various disadvantages. Managed by Cumbria Community Foundation and led by Westmorland and Furness Council. The fund aims to empower local organisations to provide targeted assistance.

Purpose of the Fund

The primary goal of the fund is to help Barrow residents overcome barriers that hinder their ability to enter the workforce. Clare Paling, a public health project officer, emphasised the need for support. Stating that many individuals are eager to work but face significant challenges.

Projects Receiving Funding

Seven projects have been selected to receive funding, each designed to address specific needs within the community:

  • Citizens Advice Barrow: £98,330 for a partnership with St Mary’s Hospice, Mind in Furness, and Carers Support.
  • A Stitch Different: £48,101 to expand the Furness Sleep Helpline pilot.
  • Cowran Care: £48,200 to assist 25 young people facing employment barriers.
  • Cumbria Addictions, Advice & Solutions (CADAS): £49,639 to support individuals affected by substance abuse in maintaining employment.
  • Barrow Forward: £50,000 for one-to-one wellness interventions for those with health-related employment barriers.
  • Inspira: £49,466 to fund a project adviser for NEET young adults.
  • Vision Support Barrow and District: £49,000 to help working-age individuals with vision impairment overcome employment challenges.

Impact of the Funding

Debbie Twinney from A Stitch Different expressed gratitude for the funding. Noting its potential to significantly improve health and wellbeing through expanded services. The initiative is expected to bring about meaningful changes for many individuals struggling to access employment.

Collaboration and Community Involvement

This fund is part of a broader public-private partnership known as Team Barrow, which includes government bodies, local councils, and businesses like BAE Systems. Sarah Thompson from Cumbria Community Foundation highlighted the impressive quality of applications received.
