58 Hounds Compete at Calebreak Meeting Near Hesket Newmarket

A total of 58 hounds took part in an evening of racing at Calebreak, near Hesket Newmarket, on Monday, 10 August.

The Carlisle and Penrith area meeting featured four race categories: senior hounds, pups, open non-winners and open restricted. Each race brought a competitive finish as the hounds returned down the fell.

Croft Lass Claims Second Win in a Week

The opening senior hound race attracted 13 runners. Sportsman made a strong start and led the field away, followed by Let It Be, Foxparke Oink Oink and Senor.

Much of the trail was out of sight from those gathered at the finish. When the hounds reappeared on the fell, Foxparke Beep Beep held a small lead over Senor and Croft Lass.

However, Croft Lass produced a strong finish after leaving the dip. She crossed the line ahead of Senor, with Foxparke Beep Beep taking third place. The result marked Croft Lass’ second victory within a week.

Let Me Try Again Wins Pups Race

Another 13 hounds competed in the pups category. Thorn Daisy led the early stages, closely followed by Let Me Try Again and Foxparke Jubilee’s Jackpot.

What Is It moved into the lead as the field came back down the fell. Let Me Try Again then made up ground and pulled clear during the final run to the line.

Let Me Try Again secured the win, with What Is It finishing second and Thorn Daisy in third.

Prospect Jill Takes Open Non-Winners Victory

The open non-winners race featured 12 hounds. Tartan Raider led the field away, followed by kennel mates Degsy Moon and Freddie Moon.

Six hounds broke away from the rest of the field during the race, with Huntsman’s Delight and Tartan Raider among the leaders.

Degsy Moon went off course as the runners came out of the dip. Prospect Jill, owned by Stuart Smith, took advantage and finished strongly to claim victory. Tartan Raider came second, while Degsy Moon recovered to finish third.

Thorn Heart Wins Largest Race of the Evening

The open restricted category attracted the biggest field, with 20 hounds taking part.

I Am It made a quick start and led the runners away ahead of Malia and Blue Striker. The hound maintained a narrow lead over Thorn Heart as they returned down the fell.

Thorn Heart, owned by Colin Satterthwaite, found more pace during the final section and passed I Am It to win the race. Blue Striker completed the top three.
