A590 Closed Near Ulverston After Serious Three-Vehicle Crash
The A590 was closed in both directions near Ulverston following a serious crash involving three vehicles.
The collision happened on the stretch between the A5087 at Ulverston and the A5092 at Greenodd on Sunday, June 7.
Emergency services, including Cumbria Police, attended the scene. National Highways also sent teams to help manage traffic and support the road closure.
Road Closed in Both Directions
The closure affected both eastbound and westbound traffic on one of South Cumbria’s busiest routes.
Drivers travelling between Barrow, Ulverston, Greenodd and the M6 were warned to expect delays and plan ahead.
National Highways said the road was expected to remain closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and collision investigation work took place.
Collision Investigation Underway
Following serious crashes, roads often need to stay closed while police carry out checks at the scene.
This can include speaking to witnesses, examining the vehicles involved and recording the position of debris or damage on the road.
Although road closures can cause major disruption, this work is important because it helps officers understand what happened and whether any further action is needed.
Diversions Put in Place
Drivers heading westbound were advised to leave the A590 at Greenodd and follow the A5092 towards Grizebeck. From there, traffic was directed onto the A595 through Kirkby-in-Furness and Askam-in-Furness before rejoining the A590 near Dalton-in-Furness.
Eastbound drivers were advised to follow the route in reverse, using the A595 and A5092 before returning to the A590 at Greenodd.
However, the diversion route was also affected by local roadworks between Grizebeck and Kirkby-in-Furness. A 7.5-tonne weight restriction was in place, creating extra difficulty for larger vehicles.
Important Route for South Cumbria
The A590 is a key road for people travelling across South Cumbria.
It links Barrow, Ulverston and the Furness peninsula with Greenodd, Newby Bridge, Kendal and the M6. When the road is closed, the impact is often felt quickly because there are limited alternative routes in the area.
Even a short closure can lead to long delays, especially for commuters, delivery drivers, emergency vehicles and people travelling to and from Barrow.
Drivers Urged to Avoid the Area
Motorists were urged to avoid the affected stretch where possible and allow extra time for journeys.
Anyone who needed to travel was advised to check live traffic updates before setting off and follow signed diversion routes.
The incident is another reminder of how quickly disruption can build on the A590 when a serious collision occurs. With limited road options across parts of Furness and South Cumbria, crashes on this route can cause delays across a much wider area.
