Car Fire Causes A590 Closure Near M6

The A590 was temporarily closed between the Brettagh Holt roundabout and Junction 36 of the M6 following a car fire. The incident caused major traffic disruption for nearly two hours before the road was reopened.

Firefighters from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene promptly, extinguishing the fire and ensuring safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Incident and Response

Emergency services were alerted to the car fire just before 2pm. North West Fire Control received the call at 1.53pm reporting a vehicle ablaze in a lay-by on the A590 near Crooklands.

Fire crews from Kendal and Arnside fire stations responded quickly. Using two breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to bring the fire under control. Firefighters remained on scene for about an hour to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area.

Police Attendance and Traffic Impact

Cumbria Police also attended the scene following a call received shortly after 2pm. Their presence helped manage the situation and maintain order during the road closure.

The fire caused significant delays for motorists travelling on the A590, the M6 near Junction 36, and the A65 near Crooklands. The closure lasted for nearly an hour, but the effects on traffic persisted for almost two hours in total.

Current Status

According to the AA, the affected stretch of the A590 has now reopened, allowing traffic to resume normal flow. Authorities continue to monitor the area to ensure safety and prevent further disruptions.
