Abbey Road reopens after motorbike crash on Dave Day
Abbey Road in Barrow was temporarily closed following a collision involving a motorbike. Just before thousands of Dave Day riders were arriving in town.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon, with the road shut while emergency services attended the scene.
One person was seen being taken away in an ambulance following the crash. No further information has yet been released about their condition or the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Abbey Road reopened at around 1.05pm, approximately two and a half hours before the main group of Dave Day motorcyclists was expected to reach Barrow at around 3.30pm.
Motorbike understood to be involved
Initial reports indicated that a motorbike was involved in the collision.
Emergency crews attended Abbey Road and closed the route while the incident was dealt with. The temporary closure affected one of the main roads into Barrow during a particularly busy day for the town.
The identity of the person taken to hospital has not been confirmed. It is also not known whether any other vehicles or people were involved.
No official statement has yet been issued confirming the severity of any injuries.
Road cleared before riders arrived
The closure caused concern because Abbey Road formed part of the route being used as thousands of motorcyclists travelled into Barrow for Dave Day.
However, the road was cleared and reopened before the main arrival was due in the town.
The riders were expected to begin reaching Barrow at around 3.30pm, meaning there was more than two hours between the road reopening and the planned arrival time.
Traffic levels across Barrow and the surrounding area were expected to be much higher than usual throughout the day.
Residents and visitors had been advised to plan journeys carefully and allow extra time because of the number of motorcycles travelling into the town.
Thousands travel to Barrow for Dave Day
Dave Day is held in memory of Barrow-born television presenter and Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers.
The event has grown into a major gathering, with motorcyclists travelling from across the UK and beyond to remember him and raise money for charity.
Large crowds were expected to line the roads as the riders made their way into Barrow.
The event also brought a number of planned traffic measures and road changes across the area to help manage the number of people attending.
Although the collision caused a temporary disruption on Abbey Road, the route reopened well before the main group was scheduled to arrive.
Police and other emergency services have not yet released further details about the crash.
Anyone travelling through Barrow during the event was advised to remain alert, follow directions from stewards and officers, and expect delays because of the high volume of traffic.
