Police Called After Man Seen Waving 18-Inch Sword on Grange Promenade

Armed police were called to Grange-over-Sands after a man was seen with an 18-inch sword on Grange Promenade.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 25th, in the South Cumbrian seaside town. Police said the man was reported to have been waving the sword around for a short time before leaving the area.

Armed officers were sent to the scene, but the man had already gone. He was seen walking off over Clare House Bridge.

Police said no direct threats were made to anyone. Officers believe the man may have been part of a stag do in the town, where people were dressed as Roman soldiers.

Police are now asking anyone with information or footage to contact them on 101, quoting log CP-20260425-0101.

Police Responded Quickly

South Lakes Police said armed officers were quickly sent to the area after the report was made.

Although the man had left before officers arrived, police said the report was treated seriously. Weapons calls can lead to a major response because officers do not know at first whether there is a wider threat to the public.

In this case, police said the man had not made direct threats and was only seen waving the sword for a short period.

Even so, an 18-inch weapon being carried in a public place would naturally cause alarm, especially on a promenade where families, walkers and visitors may be nearby.

Man May Have Been Linked to Stag Do

Police believe the incident may have involved someone taking part in a stag do.

It is understood a group in the town may have been dressed as Roman soldiers. That may explain why the sword was being carried, but it does not remove the concern caused by someone waving a weapon in public.

Even if the incident was meant as part of a costume or joke, police made clear that reports like this are taken seriously.

Public spaces such as Grange Promenade are used by residents, tourists and families. Seeing someone with a large weapon, even as part of fancy dress, can cause fear and lead to an armed police response.

Caller Praised for Reporting It

Police said the person who reported the incident stayed calm and did the right thing by calling 999.

That call allowed officers to respond quickly and check whether there was any risk to the public.

Police said this kind of incident is “extremely rare”, but added that reports involving weapons are always treated as serious.

The response shows why people are encouraged to report concerns straight away rather than assuming something is harmless.

Why It Caused Concern

The incident appears to have ended without anyone being hurt or directly threatened.

However, the presence of an 18-inch sword in a public place is still serious. Even if linked to fancy dress, carrying or waving a weapon can create panic and put pressure on emergency services.

Armed police responses are not routine in small towns such as Grange-over-Sands. When they do happen, they can be unsettling for local people and visitors.

The fact that no one was injured is reassuring, but the incident is still a reminder that costumes, stag do props and public behaviour can quickly cross a line if weapons are involved.

Appeal for Information

Police are continuing to ask for information about what happened.

Anyone who saw the incident, has mobile phone footage, or has any details that may help officers is asked to contact police on 101, quoting log CP-20260425-0101.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 25th, on Grange Promenade, before the man was seen heading away over Clare House Bridge.
