Barrow Approves New Parking Rules and School One-Way System

The Furness Locality Board has approved new parking restrictions on Barrow Island and Greengate Street. Alongside a new one way system aimed at improving safety near Newbarns Primary School. These measures were finalised during a meeting on April 8th.

Background of the Proposals

Council officer Mo Dooz presented the proposals to the councillors, who provided their feedback. The aim is to address parking issues that have affected residents, particularly on Barrow Island.

Community Concerns

Cllr Anne Burns expressed the frustrations of Barrow Island residents, who have struggled with parking spaces being occupied by workers from nearby businesses. She hopes the new measures will significantly improve the situation for local residents.

Enhanced Enforcement

During the discussions, Cllr David Cassidy inquired about the collaboration with the enforcement team to ensure effective monitoring of the new parking regulations. The officer assured that there would be improved enforcement, with the highways department working closely with parking teams.

School Safety Initiative

Cllr Roy Worthington highlighted the importance of the one-way system for enhancing safety around Newbarns Primary School. He noted that while it may seem straightforward, implementing such measures requires considerable effort.

Addressing Congestion

Cllr Niyall Phillips pointed out that Newbarns Primary School faces significant congestion during school pick-up and drop-off times. He emphasised that the new measures were developed in response to community concerns regarding child safety on the roads.
