Barrow and other rural areas are at risk of falling behind in mobile connectivity, with unreliable 5G service and limited provider options. Local MPs have expressed concerns following the Mobile Market Review, urging the government to set higher quality standards and ensure investment reaches all communities.
The MPs highlighted the disparity between rural and urban areas in access to reliable 5G, emphasising the need for better connectivity to support growth and fairness.
Concerns over Rural Connectivity
Michelle Scrogham and other Labour representatives from rural constituencies have raised alarms about the quality of mobile service in their areas. They pointed out that Ofcom’s data reveals rural and coastal regions lag significantly behind cities in terms of high-quality 5G access. In many places, coverage is provided by only one network provider, leading to patchy signals and fewer choices for residents.
This situation results in higher costs for local businesses that depend on fast and stable internet, further disadvantaging these communities.
Calls for Government Action
The Mobile Market Review aims to shape the government’s ambition to provide standalone 5G coverage to all populated areas by 2030. Mrs Scrogham stressed the importance of the review setting proper quality standards, increasing transparency, and ensuring investments reach rural communities like Barrow, Furness, and southwest Cumbria.
Improved connectivity is seen as essential for economic growth and fairness across these regions.
Stakeholder Engagement and Evidence Gathering
The review encourages stakeholders to provide evidence on various aspects, including the impact of technological and market developments on investment, innovation, competition, and consumers. It also seeks input on policy measures that could unlock further investment in mobile networks and the appropriate quality-of-service and coverage levels needed to fully realise standalone 5G benefits.
Additionally, the government aims to ensure the regulatory framework continues to support its objectives in an evolving market.
Demand for Transparency
The rural MPs have called for greater transparency so residents can better understand why mobile service quality varies across different geographic areas. This transparency is crucial for addressing the disparities and ensuring equitable access to mobile services.
Support from Multiple MPs
Michelle Scrogham was joined in signing the joint letter to the Minister for Digital Economy, Baroness Lloyd of Effra CBE, by a large group of MPs representing rural areas. Their collective effort underscores the widespread concern about mobile connectivity issues in rural communities and the urgent need for government action.
