Dog Ban Introduced on Barrow Beaches During Bird Nesting Season

Dog owners in Barrow are being reminded of restrictions on parts of the coastline as the bird nesting season gets underway.

The seasonal rules are designed to protect vulnerable wildlife, particularly ground-nesting birds that rely on undisturbed beaches to raise their young.

Beaches and Areas Affected

The restrictions mainly apply to wildlife-sensitive areas along Walney Island and the Barrow coastline, including:

  • South Walney Nature Reserve – dogs are not permitted at any time due to its importance for wildlife
  • Foulney Island – access is restricted during the breeding season, with dogs not allowed in nesting areas
  • Roanhead and Sandscale Haws – important conservation areas where dogs must be kept under close control
  • Earnse Bay and surrounding beaches – restrictions may apply, especially from spring through summer

While many Cumbrian beaches remain dog-friendly, these areas are highlighted due to their role in supporting bird populations.

Why the Ban Is in Place

During spring and early summer, many birds nest directly on the ground along the coast. These nests are often hard to see and can be easily disturbed.

Even well-behaved dogs can:

  • accidentally damage nests
  • scare adult birds away from eggs or chicks
  • cause birds to abandon nesting areas

Keeping dogs under control is seen as key to protecting these species during their most sensitive period.

Key Rules for Dog Owners

Visitors are being asked to follow simple rules to help protect wildlife:

  • Keep dogs on a lead, especially near dunes and shingle
  • Stay on marked paths and avoid fenced-off areas
  • Do not allow dogs to roam freely near nesting sites
  • Follow all local signage and guidance

In some locations, full bans are in place, while others require dogs to be under strict control.

A Seasonal Approach

These measures are not permanent. Restrictions are typically in place during the nesting season, from spring through to late summer, when birds are most vulnerable.

Across the UK, similar seasonal rules are common and are often enforced to protect wildlife during breeding periods.

What It Means for Visitors

For most dog walkers, there are still plenty of areas where dogs can be exercised freely. However, extra care is needed in sensitive coastal zones.

Authorities are encouraging people to enjoy the coastline responsibly, helping to protect wildlife while still making the most of Barrow’s beaches.
