A charity in Barrow is experiencing a significant shortage of food supplies. Items such as gravy powder, UHT milk, and tinned meat are running low. Currently, the charity has only one jar of gravy powder and two UHT milks left, which is insufficient for the upcoming week.
Day Centre Services
The charity operates a day centre located at 27 Bath Street. It welcomes individuals every Tuesday from 11am to 1pm for a hot meal. Additionally, the centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, providing advice and support for those facing homelessness.
How to Help
The charity encourages food donations during their opening hours. Contributions can include essential items like pasta sauces and custard. Financial donations are also welcomed through their website.
Community Impact
Claire Preston, a support worker at the charity, highlighted the importance of their services. She stated that they provide meals for around 30 individuals each Tuesday. The closure of their food services would greatly affect the vulnerable members of the community.
Year-Round Support
Initially, the charity offered a ‘warm space’ during winter months. However, they have identified a need for continued support throughout the year. Many individuals, including those who have recently been housed, have expressed the importance of access to hot meals.
Personal Stories
Ms Preston shared a poignant story of a gentleman who received housing last July. He remarked that he could not remember the last time he had a hot meal, highlighting the ongoing need for such services.
