The Grow in Furness initiative is working to establish a new green space at Mardale Grove, located off Greengate Street. Launched in May last year, this project is a collaboration between Barrow BID, Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, and Barrow Town Council. A volunteer day is scheduled for April 11th to encourage community participation.
Community Involvement
Residents are encouraged to join the volunteer day to help clear the site. This effort is crucial for moving the project forward. The spokesperson for Grow in Furness expressed optimism about the potential of the space, stating it could become a hub for community interaction and nature.
Project Features
Once the area is cleared, plans include the installation of large greenhouses, raised beds, and communal growing spaces. A unique feature will be a bug hotel designed to resemble Barrow Town Hall. These elements aim to enhance biodiversity and promote community engagement.
Challenges Faced
The site has suffered from years of neglect and was previously used as a dumping ground. This has made the initial clearing and safety measures essential. The community’s dedication has been vital in addressing these challenges.
Future Plans
In addition to the greenhouses and raised beds, the project will include a dedicated learning space. This area will serve as a resource for community education on gardening and sustainability.
Support and Updates
The initiative has received support from the Furness Multi-Cultural Community Forum, which has helped gather materials for the project. For ongoing updates and volunteer opportunities, interested individuals can visit the Grow in Furness Facebook page.
