Shaun Nelson, a 30-year-old man from Barrow, admitted to stealing a total of £392.87 worth of items. Taken from two local stores, Home Bargains and B&M Bargains. His thefts occurred on multiple occasions between September last year and January this year. Ending in an assault on a security guard.
The case was heard at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court, where Nelson pleaded guilty to five counts of shop theft and one count of common assault. The court has adjourned sentencing pending a pre-sentence report.
Details of the Thefts
Nelson stole £90.98 worth of groceries from Home Bargains on three separate occasions in September 2025. Later, on 11 November, he took £276.91 worth of toys and other items from B&M Bargains. Finally, on 22 January, he stole £24.98 worth of laundry products from B&M Bargains.
Assault on Security Guard
Nelson’s offending came to an end when he assaulted a security guard who challenged him over the theft of the laundry items. This assault added a charge of common assault to his case.
Court Proceedings and Bail Conditions
At South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on 16 March 2026, Nelson pleaded guilty to all charges. The magistrates have adjourned the case to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared, which will inform the final sentencing decision.
In the meantime, Nelson has been granted conditional bail. A key condition of his bail is that he must not enter any B&M or Home Bargains stores in Cumbria.
