Michael Austin, a 37-year-old man from High Cliff, Barrow, was found with cocaine and cannabis during a police stop. The discovery happened while officers were speaking to him about an unrelated issue.

The drugs were found in a packet of tobacco containing five bags with white powder and plant material. Tests confirmed the substances as crack cocaine and cannabis.

Details of the Offence

The incident was presented at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Peter Kelly stated that these were Austin’s first recorded drug offences. Austin pleaded guilty remotely from HMP Preston on March 19.

Defendant’s Background and Circumstances

Michael Graham, representing Austin, explained that he had struggled with substance misuse, particularly cocaine, at the time. However, Austin had been clean for several weeks before the court hearing.

Austin was already in custody for charges related to violence, coercive behaviour, and harassment. He was awaiting a separate hearing for these offences.

Sentencing and Penalties

The magistrates ordered Austin to serve an additional five days in custody while on remand. He was also required to pay a £154 victim surcharge.

The court sought the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs found in his possession.
