Daniel Barker, 33, serving a lengthy sentence for a brutal stabbing, has been posting rap videos from prison. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is investigating how these videos appeared online.

Barker was jailed for ten years and nine months following a 2017 scissor attack. He also received a nine-week sentence in 2023 for assaulting an emergency worker. The MoJ confirmed he remains in custody.

Background of the Offence

In October 2016, Barker stabbed a victim multiple times with scissors in Barrow. The attack was so severe that the scissors broke, leaving part embedded in the victim’s head. The victim was airlifted to hospital and suffered permanent scars.

Barker was charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon. Initially denying the charges, he later pleaded guilty before trial.

Prison Rap Videos on Social Media

Since November 2025, an Instagram account named @barrow_barkz has shared 17 videos of Barker and other inmates rapping. The page has over 1,100 followers.

Lyrics in the videos describe life in prison and Barker’s experiences. The content has raised concerns about prisoners accessing social media.

Ministry of Justice Response

The MoJ labelled the videos “unacceptable” and has requested their removal. It is investigating how the content was posted.

The MoJ emphasised that prisoners are not allowed unsupervised internet or social media access. Those caught accessing the internet without permission face punishment.

Security Measures in Prisons

The MoJ is working to prevent illegal phones and weapons entering prisons. Measures include improved windows, netting, and grilles.

A specialist team collaborates with social media companies to identify and remove content posted illegally from prisons.

Consequences for Prisoners

Offenders found with phones or weapons in prison risk further penalties. This can include additional prison time of up to 2 years.
