Lee McQuistan, a 29-year-old man from Barrow, was sentenced for assaulting a police officer during a night out. The incident occurred on November 9th last year, when police were called to assist him due to his drunken behaviour. McQuistan pleaded guilty to the charges in court.

According to prosecutor Peter Kelly, PC Jenkin encountered McQuistan shortly before midnight. Officers advised him to go home after issues at a local establishment. However, McQuistan became increasingly animated and aggressive due to his level of intoxication.
Assault on Officer
During the encounter, McQuistan spat towards PC Jenkin, although the spit did not make contact. The prosecutor highlighted that alcohol played a significant role in McQuistan’s actions. He was charged with assaulting a constable and being drunk and disorderly in a public place.
Defendant’s Background
McQuistan had no prior convictions for ten years, indicating a previously clean record. His solicitor, Michael Graham, explained that it was uncommon for McQuistan to go out drinking. He expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he was embarrassed and ashamed.

The court heard that McQuistan is a single parent to a four-year-old daughter and works part-time as a builder. His lifestyle is centred around his daughter, and he acknowledged that his behaviour was not an example to set for her.
Sentencing
Chair of the bench, Charles Crewdson, fined McQuistan £200 and ordered him to pay £85 in court costs, along with an £80 victim surcharge. Crewdson emphasised the importance of McQuistan learning from this incident to prevent future occurrences.
