Michelle Scrogham, the Labour MP for Barrow and Furness, has expressed concern over the struggles faced by British farmers. She argues that they are being unfairly affected by cheap imports that do not meet the same standards.
As a member of the Labour Rural Research Group, Scrogham is advocating for stronger support for local farmers. She highlights their commitment to high animal welfare and environmental standards, which contribute to the quality of food produced in the UK.
Challenges Faced by Farmers
Scrogham points out that British farmers are under pressure from imports with lower standards. This situation is exacerbated by unfair supermarket practices and a confusing labelling system that makes it difficult for consumers to choose British products.
Call for Honest Labelling
The Labour Rural Research Group, which includes over 25 MPs, is pushing for ‘Honest Labelling’. This initiative would require mandatory origin and welfare labels, making it easier for consumers to identify high welfare British produce.
Leveling the Playing Field
In addition to labelling reforms, the group is advocating for measures to protect British farmers in trade agreements. They believe that a fairer approach is necessary to ensure that local farmers can compete effectively.
Reforming Regulations
The MPs are also calling for reforms to the Groceries Code Adjudicator. They want to reduce unnecessary regulations that burden farmers, allowing them to focus on their businesses.
Support for Family Farms
Scrogham has previously supported changes to inheritance tax that would benefit family-run farms. She believes that these farms are vital to rural communities and that the tax system should reflect their importance.
By increasing the Agricultural Property Relief threshold, most farms will be exempt from additional inheritance tax. This change aims to provide stability and confidence for family-run farms in the future.
