Drivers using some council-run car parks in Barrow will soon have to pay more, with new charges due to come into effect from April 2026.

The changes will apply at Fell Street, Hall Street, Oldham Street and Whittaker Street.

New parking charges

The updated hourly prices will be:

  • Up to 20 minutes: 80p
  • Up to 1 hour: £2
  • Up to 2 hours: £3.20
  • Up to 3 hours: £4.10

These new rates will affect drivers using the listed off-street car parks in the town.

Permit fee increases

There will also be increases to annual parking permits.

  • Standard annual permit: rising from £783 to £861.30
  • Market traders’ annual permit: rising from £132 to £145.20

That means:

  • the standard annual permit is going up by £78.30
  • the market traders’ permit is going up by £13.20

What it means for drivers

The new charges mean higher costs for regular users of these car parks, including shoppers, workers and permit holders.

For people who rely on long-term parking, the annual permit increase will be the most noticeable change. Short-stay users will also need to be aware of the new hourly rates when parking in town.

Changes start in April

The new charges are expected to begin in April, so drivers are being urged to check signs and payment machines before leaving their vehicles.
