Public toilets on Fell Street in Barrow will close from Monday, 23 March for six weeks. The closure is to allow refurbishment of the male, female, and disabled facilities.

The refurbishment is funded by Westmorland and Furness Council’s capital programme. It includes new windows, doors, cubicles, electrical work, and redecoration.

Reason for Refurbishment

The toilets have been undergoing a revamp since last year. This followed criticism from a local councillor who described the facilities as “absolutely inadequate.” The council aims to improve the town centre amenities.

Alternative Facilities

During the closure, alternative public toilets are available at Barrow Town Hall and Barrow Library. Barrow Town Hall is an eight-minute walk from Fell Street, while Barrow Library is about a ten-minute walk.

Council’s Vision

A council spokesperson said the works are part of ongoing efforts to enhance facilities in Barrow town centre. The goal is to make Barrow a better place to live, work, and thrive.

Project Details

The refurbishment will involve installing new windows and doors to improve security and appearance. New cubicles will provide better privacy. Electrical systems will be updated for safety and efficiency. Finally, the toilets will be redecorated to create a cleaner, more welcoming environment.

Conclusion

The temporary closure is necessary to deliver these improvements. The council encourages residents and visitors to use the alternative facilities nearby during this period. Once completed, the upgraded toilets will offer a much-improved experience for all users.
