In May, the Furness RUFC hosted the Lee White Memorial Rugby Match at the Strawberry Grounds. This event celebrated the life of Lee White, who was deeply loved and respected, following his passing in 2016. Friends and family gathered to honour his memory and support a worthy cause.
Last week, representatives from the event visited St Mary’s Hospice in Barrow to present a cheque for £2,460. This generous donation will aid the hospice in its ongoing efforts to provide care and support to those in need.
Community Spirit and Remembrance
The rugby match served not only as a fundraiser but also as a platform to raise awareness for DKMS UK, a charity focused on recruiting stem cell donors for patients with blood disorders. The event attracted many attendees, including family, friends, and rugby enthusiasts, all united in a spirit of remembrance and community.
Lee White’s Legacy
Lee White was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia three years before his death. His journey was marked by resilience, as he received two life-saving stem cell transplants from unrelated donors in Germany. His story continues to inspire many and highlights the importance of donor registration.
Gratitude from St Mary’s Hospice
A spokesperson from St Mary’s Hospice expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the event. They noted, “Your generosity, kindness and support mean so much to us.” The hospice is grateful for the continued backing from the local community, which plays a crucial role in their operations.
The Lee White Memorial Rugby Match was a powerful reminder of community strength and the impact of collective action. It brought together individuals in honour of a beloved figure while supporting essential services like those provided by St Mary’s Hospice.
