Do You Need Tickets for Barrow Soapbox Derby?
No spectator tickets are required. Barrow BID lists the Soapbox Derby as a free event, so visitors can simply arrive in the town centre and find a place along the route.
The entry fees shown on the event website are for teams taking part in the race, rather than members of the public watching.
Food, drinks and funfair rides may be available separately throughout the day, so visitors may still want to bring some money.
Where Is the Soapbox Derby Taking Place?
The races will take place along Dalton Road in Barrow town centre.
The course begins at a five-metre-high starting ramp outside Subway on Dalton Road. The karts will then travel down the road, tackling several obstacles before reaching the finish line near Townhouse.211.
Spectators will be able to watch from designated areas along the course. The Pit Lane will also be located on Dalton Road, giving visitors a chance to see the karts and meet some of the teams between races.
An accessible viewing area will be provided at the top of Portland Walk. This will include ramped access, space for visitors with limited mobility and volunteers who can offer help. A large screen will also show more of the racing as it happens.
What Time Does the Racing Start?
The first kart is expected to leave the starting ramp at around 10am. Its time will set the early target for the other teams.
Each team will complete several runs during the day as they try to record the fastest time. There will also be a break for lunch, giving visitors time to explore the cafés, restaurants and takeaways around the town centre.
Racing is expected to finish at around 4pm. The awards will then begin at the Ørsted finish-line stage near Townhouse.211 from approximately 4.30pm, with the wider event ending at 5pm.
Prizes will be presented for more than speed alone. Categories will include the fastest kart, most creative design, costumes and the popular Joker of the Day award.
What Obstacles Will the Karts Face?
This year’s drivers will need to make their way through a course filled with jumps, sharp turns and plenty of surprises.
Obstacles will include:
- The Mini Ramp, a small but potentially tricky jump
- Cavendish Corner, where drivers will need to balance speed and control
- The Splash Zone, complete with foam, bubbles, water and a giant shark
- The Construction Zone, featuring cones, signs and imitation building materials
- The Cattle Rattle, where karts will cross a cattle-grid-style obstacle while avoiding inflatable livestock
Live commentary from Cando FM will help spectators follow the action throughout the day.
Will Anything Else Be Happening?
A funfair will be open on Cavendish Street and at Fell Street Car Park from 10am until 5pm. It will include rides for children as well as larger attractions.
The Soapbox Derby is also the first part of the Brilliant Barrow Weekend. The Dockside Festival will follow at the Dock Museum on Sunday 16 August, with more free family entertainment.
Road Closures and Parking
Drivers should expect several closures around Barrow town centre while the course is built, used and removed.
Dalton Road and Portland Walk will be affected from Friday 14 August until late on Saturday night. Further restrictions will be in place between 7am and 10pm on Saturday.
For more information see our post on road closures due the soapbox derby.
Visitors driving into Barrow may want to arrive early and allow extra time to find a space.
Anyone travelling by train can reach Barrow from the Furness Line or the Cumbrian Coast Line. Local Stagecoach buses also serve the town centre, although services may be diverted because of the road closures.
With free entry, accessible viewing and a full day of racing planned, Barrow Soapbox Derby is expected to attract large crowds. Those hoping to watch the opening runs or secure a preferred viewing spot should aim to arrive before racing begins at 10am.
