Temporary Units Arrive for Displaced Barrow Market Traders

Temporary trading units have begun arriving in Barrow to support market traders forced out by the sudden closure of the town’s indoor market earlier this year.

The first units were delivered on Thursday, April 3rd. As part of efforts to help traders return to business after the Market Hall was shut on February 17th due to safety concerns. Around 12 traders were left without premises following the closure.

Market Closure Forced Sudden Shutdown

Barrow Market closed with immediate effect after Westmorland and Furness Council determined the building was no longer safe to operate.

The Market Hall, alongside the Forum, had reached the end of its usable life. With ongoing structural issues including roof leaks and wider deterioration.

Officials confirmed that reopening the building, even temporarily, would require major repairs, leading to the decision to close it without delay.

Temporary Units to Get Traders Back to Work

The newly delivered units will act as replacement trading spaces, giving affected businesses a chance to resume operations while longer-term plans are developed.

More units are expected to arrive after Easter. With traders able to move in once installation and preparation work has been completed.

The council said the aim is to provide a practical, short-term solution to minimise disruption and support local businesses.

Not Part of Long-Term Plans

Council leaders have made clear that the temporary units are not a permanent replacement for the market.

Instead, they form part of an interim approach while plans progress for a new “Market Village” in the town centre.

Future Plans for the Market Site

Earlier proposals for a £17.5 million redevelopment of the Market Hall have now been dropped.

Attention has shifted towards creating a Market Village, which could include modern retail units, open public space and a redesigned town centre environment.

Demolition of the existing Market Hall and Forum buildings is expected as part of these longer-term regeneration plans.
