Sonjie Marshall chose to forgo traditional birthday presents for her milestone birthday in June last year. Instead, she focused on giving back to her community through fundraising efforts.
This month, she visited St Mary’s Hospice and the Barrow Army Cadets to present them with official cheques. The hospice received £6,300, while the Cadets were given £5,300 to support their ongoing work.
Fundraising Activities
Over the year, Sonjie organised various charitable events. These included music nights, fairs, and raffles. In a notable moment, she even had her head shaved in August to raise funds and awareness.
She expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed, including venues like the Fairfield in Barrow and Roose Social and Sports Club for their support and generosity.
Community Support and Acknowledgements
Sonjie thanked local supporters such as singer and entertainer Jorgie Sam Wilson, Alex Taylor from Cando FM, and The Mail for their coverage and encouragement.
She also praised the fundraising team for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Impact on Local Charities
The £6,300 donated to St Mary’s Hospice will assist their ongoing care services in the south Cumbria area. The £5,300 given to Barrow Army Cadets will help them continue providing valuable activities and support to young people in Barrow-in-Furness.
Sonjie described presenting the cheque to the Cadets as a privilege and appreciated their warm reception and hospitality.
Future Plans
With the fundraising completed, Sonjie plans to focus on campaigning for improved healthcare facilities. Her goals include advocating for full intensive care unit (ICU) services at Furness General Hospital and the creation of a theatre space in Barrow town centre.
Her efforts highlight a strong commitment to enhancing community wellbeing beyond fundraising.
