Ulverston takeaway remains closed after deep fat fryer fire

An Ulverston takeaway remains temporarily closed after a fire involving a deep fat fryer brought 3 fire engines to Victoria Road.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service was called to Beijing Garden Fish Bar and Chinese Takeaway. Arriving shortly after 4.15pm on Saturday, June 20th 2026.

Three fire engines from Ulverston and Milnthorpe attended the incident. With crews spending one hour and 20 minutes at the scene.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, a hose reel jet and a dry powder extinguisher to put out the blaze.

Cumbria Police also attended to help establish a cordon around the building.

No injuries were reported.

Beijing Garden remained closed at the time of the latest update, and the business has not yet announced when it expects to reopen.

Fire started in deep fat fryer

A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews were mobilised at 4.16pm. Following reports of a fire inside a commercial property on Victoria Road.

The blaze involved a deep fat fryer within the takeaway.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the affected area. While crews used a hose reel jet and dry powder extinguisher to bring the fire under control.

Dry powder extinguishers can be used on some fires involving cooking oils or electrical equipment, where water may not be suitable.

The fire service has not released further information about the extent of the damage caused inside the building.

It is also unclear whether the fire affected only the kitchen or caused damage elsewhere within the takeaway.

Police helped secure the area

Cumbria Police attended the scene to assist with a cordon while firefighters dealt with the incident.

Firefighters remained at the property for around 80 minutes before leaving the scene.

There were no reported injuries involving staff, customers or members of the emergency services.

The cause of the fire has been identified as involving the deep fat fryer, although no further details have been released about how it began.

Business announces temporary closure

Beijing Garden posted an update on social media following the incident.

A spokesperson said: “Hi everyone, due to an incident at the shop, we will be closed temporarily. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

The takeaway had not reopened when the latest information was published.

No reopening date has been confirmed. And it is not yet known whether repairs, safety checks or replacement kitchen equipment will be required before the business can reopen.

The length of the closure is likely to depend on the level of damage and the outcome of any inspections carried out at the property.

Customers are advised to check the takeaway’s social media pages for further updates.

Fire service urges care around cooking equipment

Commercial kitchens regularly use high-temperature cooking equipment, including deep fat fryers, which can present a serious fire risk if oil becomes overheated or equipment develops a fault.

Water should never be poured onto burning cooking oil because it can cause the fire to spread rapidly.

Businesses are expected to maintain suitable fire safety equipment, train staff and keep escape routes clear.

The incident was brought under control without anyone being injured, but Beijing Garden will remain shut until the business confirms it is safe and ready to reopen.
