The Ulverston and North Lonsdale Show experienced an unexpected moment of excitement when a bull broke free in the horse ring. Fortunately, the animal was quickly recaptured without incident. The show, held in Urswick, was filled with activities, food stalls, and eager participants.

Event Preparations

Organisers dedicated months to planning the show. Margaret Coward, the show secretary, mentioned that they had spent a year preparing for the event. Despite some challenges, such as muddy conditions from overnight rain, the team remained optimistic about the day’s success.

The show featured a variety of attractions, including the Jez Avery stunt show and a fancy dress pony parade. Competitions ranged from livestock displays to baking contests, ensuring there was something for everyone.

Alice’s Dog Show

A highlight of the event was Alice’s Dog Show, which has become a beloved tradition since its inception in 2011. This show was inspired by Alice Pyne, who wanted to enter her dog, Mabel, as part of her bucket list. Alice sadly passed away in 2013, but her legacy continues.

Dog Show Highlights

The 2016 edition of Alice’s Dog Show attracted over 70 entries, with local judge Steph Whitaker overseeing the classes. Categories included pedigree competitions and fun events like the waggiest tail. Elise, an Alaskan Malamute, won Best in Show, while Mabel, Alice’s dog, was awarded Reserve Best in Show.

Community Spirit

The atmosphere at the show was described as family-friendly and welcoming. Participants and visitors alike enjoyed the day, celebrating local culture and community spirit.
