Candidates Confirmed for Barrow By-Election

Candidates have been confirmed for two upcoming by elections in Barrow.

The votes will take place on Thursday, June 4th. After former councillor Niyall Phillips resigned to pursue a career in Australia. His resignation left vacancies for Hawcoat and Newbarns on Westmorland and Furness Council. And Hawcoat on Barrow Town Council.

Nominations closed on Thursday, May 7th. Westmorland and Furness Council has now confirmed who will stand in each election.

Candidates for Hawcoat and Newbarns

Five candidates will stand for the Hawcoat and Newbarns ward on Westmorland and Furness Council.

They are:

  • Rebekah Atkinson – Green Party
  • Hazel Edwards – Reform UK
  • Marco Fawcett – Conservatives
  • Mike Leach – Labour
  • Stephen Pickthall – Liberal Democrat

The winner will fill the vacant seat on Westmorland and Furness Council.

Candidates for Hawcoat Ward

There will also be a by-election for the Hawcoat ward on Barrow Town Council.

Three candidates are standing:

  • Terry Assouad – Labour
  • Hazel Edwards – Reform UK
  • Marco Fawcett – Conservatives

This means voters in the area may be asked to vote in more than one election on the same day, depending on where they live.

When Voting Takes Place

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, June 4th.

Residents who are eligible to vote but are not yet registered must register by midnight on Monday, May 18th.

Anyone who wants to apply for a postal vote, or change or cancel an existing postal vote, must do so by 5pm on Tuesday, May 19th.

Proxy Voting and Photo ID

Voters who want someone else to vote on their behalf by proxy must apply by 5pm on Wednesday, May 27th.

Photo ID is also required to vote at a polling station. Anyone who does not have accepted photo ID can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

The deadline to apply for this certificate is 5pm on Wednesday, May 27th.

Key dates include:

  • Monday, May 18th – deadline to register to vote
  • Tuesday, May 19th – deadline to apply for, amend or cancel a postal vote
  • Wednesday, May 27th – deadline to apply for a proxy vote
  • Wednesday, May 27th – deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate
  • Thursday, June 4th – polling day

The by-elections will decide who represents local residents on Westmorland and Furness Council and Barrow Town Council.
