Carlisle Man Arrested After Police Appeal
A Carlisle man who was wanted on recall to prison has been arrested, police have confirmed.
Officers had previously appealed for help to find Stewart Brown, 26, of Carlisle, after he was wanted for recall to prison. Cumbria Police later confirmed that he had been arrested.
Police thanked members of the public for their help following the appeal.
The arrest brings the public appeal to an end. Police have not released further details about where Brown was arrested or the circumstances of the arrest.
What Does Recall to Prison Mean?
A recall to prison usually happens when someone has been released from custody on licence but is then required to return to prison.
This can happen if they are believed to have breached the conditions of their licence, if there are concerns about risk, or if there is a risk of further offending. Government guidance says a person released on licence or parole can be taken back to prison if they break probation rules.
It does not always mean the person has been convicted of a new offence. In many cases, recall is linked to licence conditions set after release.
These conditions can include requirements such as keeping appointments with probation, living at an approved address, staying away from certain people or places, and following curfew or supervision rules.
Police Appeal Now Closed
Police appeals for wanted people are often issued when officers believe the public may be able to help locate someone.
In this case, people were asked to contact police if they had information that could help officers find Brown. Following his arrest, that appeal is no longer active.
Cumbria Police have not provided any further public update about the next stage of the process.
Once someone wanted on recall is arrested, they can be returned to custody while the recall is dealt with through the prison and probation system.
Public Help Can Be Important
Wanted appeals often rely on local information, especially when the person has links to a particular area.
In this case, Brown was linked to Carlisle, and police had asked anyone with information to get in touch.
The force has now thanked the public after confirming the arrest.
No further action is required from members of the public in relation to the appeal.
Previous Police Information
The original appeal said Brown was wanted for recall to prison and asked anyone with information to contact police on 101.
Now that he has been arrested, people should not continue sharing old appeal posts as active appeals, as this can cause confusion.
Police updates are usually issued when wanted appeals are resolved, particularly where the public has been asked to help trace someone.
