Cartmel Pair to Appear at Crown Court Over Cannabis Supply Charge

Two people from Cartmel have appeared in court charged with being concerned in the supply of cannabis over a three-year period.

Emma Sweeney, 25, and Nathan Howes, 34, both of Headless Close, Cartmel, are jointly charged with being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug.

The alleged offence is said to have taken place at Cartmel between February 17, 2022, and March 27, 2025.

Both defendants appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on May 27.

Charge Relates to Cannabis Supply

The court heard that Sweeney and Howes are accused of being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Cannabis is a Class B drug under UK law.

The charge covers a period of more than three years. It is alleged to have taken place in Cartmel.

No detailed evidence was heard during the magistrates’ court hearing.

Plea Details

Sweeney pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Howes did not indicate a plea during the hearing.

Because of the nature of the charge, the case will now move to the crown court.

Both defendants are due to appear at Preston Crown Court on June 24.

That hearing will be a plea and trial preparation hearing.

What Happens Next

At the next court hearing, the case is expected to move forward through the crown court process.

A plea and trial preparation hearing is usually used to confirm pleas, deal with early case management, and set a timetable for the next stages.

If the case proceeds to trial, a future trial date may be fixed.

If any pleas are entered, the court will then decide the next steps.

Bail Granted

Magistrates granted both defendants unconditional bail.

This means Sweeney and Howes remain on bail while the case continues.

They must next attend Preston Crown Court on June 24.

Case Remains Ongoing

The allegations have not been proven in court.

Sweeney has denied the charge, and Howes has not yet entered a plea.

The case will now continue at crown court, where further details may be heard at a later date.
