Cumbria Included in Co-op’s Latest Store Investment Programme

Cumbria is one of the areas set to benefit from Co-op’s latest UK store investment programme.

The retailer has confirmed that 24 new or refurbished stores will launch during the second quarter of 2026, which runs up to the end of June. The programme includes new stores, upgraded stores reopening after major investment, and new franchise sites.

Co-op said the investment will support high streets and local communities across Britain, with Cumbria named among the towns, villages and cities included in the latest round of openings and refurbishments.

Cumbria Named in Latest Rollout

The Co-op announcement does not name the exact Cumbrian stores included in the programme.

However, it confirms that the latest investment stretches across Britain, from the south coast of England to the Scottish Highlands, and includes locations in Cumbria, Gloucestershire, Kent, London, the Midlands, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

The stores launching this quarter are part of a wider programme of investment in physical shops. Co-op said 18 stores opened in the first quarter of 2026, meaning more than 40 stores will have opened or relaunched during the first half of the year.

What the Investment Includes

The latest store programme includes a mix of:

  • brand-new Co-op stores
  • existing stores reopening after refurbishment
  • franchise stores in new locations
  • stores linked to university campuses, hospitals and petrol forecourts

Co-op said the aim is to create local shops that serve as more than just places to buy food. The retailer wants its stores to act as community hubs, offering everyday groceries alongside added services.

Services Expected in Local Stores

Co-op said its stores are focused on convenience, value and local access.

Depending on the site, stores may offer:

  • food and drink for everyday shopping
  • coffee
  • payment services
  • parcel collection
  • soft plastic recycling
  • online grocery delivery through Co-op and partner apps

The retailer also said its shops are used as local bases for quick commerce. This means online orders are picked in nearby stores before being delivered to customers. Around 90% of the UK population now has access to Co-op groceries online through Co-op’s own website or partners such as Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Focus on High Streets and Communities

Co-op said the investment is part of its plan to support high streets and local communities.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Retail Director, said the retailer is investing in stores that are “more than just a shop” and can act as convenient local hubs. She said the stores are designed to support everyday needs, from top-up shops to food for an evening at home.

For Cumbrian communities, the announcement suggests continued investment in smaller local retail formats at a time when many high streets and village centres are under pressure.

More Franchise Stores Planned

Co-op is also growing its franchise operation.

The retailer had 65 franchise stores operating at the end of 2025. It now aims to grow this to more than 100 franchise sites during 2026.

These stores are expected to include sites on university campuses, in hospitals and on petrol forecourts. Co-op said this approach helps bring its membership model and convenience offer to more communities.

British Food and Member Savings

Co-op said its stores will continue to offer member price savings, promotions and deals.

The retailer also highlighted its support for British agriculture. It said all of its own fresh and frozen meat, including meat used in pies, ready meals and sandwiches, is 100% British.

Exact Cumbria Locations Still to Be Confirmed

While Cumbria has been named as part of the latest programme, Co-op has not yet set out the specific Cumbrian store locations in the announcement.

The new and refurbished stores are due to launch by the end of June 2026. More details are expected to become clear as individual stores prepare to open or reopen.
