Former Cleator Moor Pub Set to Become 21 Room HMO
A former West Cumbrian pub is set to be converted into a 21-room house in multiple occupation.
Plans to change the use of The Commercial, on High Street in Cleator Moor, have been approved by Cumberland Council.
The building has been vacant for several years after previously operating as a pub.
The approved plans include 21 en-suite bedrooms, bicycle storage, an indoor amenity room and a roof terrace.
Plans Approved for Former Pub
Cumberland Council has approved plans to convert The Commercial into a house in multiple occupation, often known as an HMO.
The application was submitted by Cleator Moor Developments Ltd, which asked the council for permission to change the use of the former pub.
The building is located on High Street in Cleator Moor and has not been in regular use for some time.
The Commercial closed in 2006 before reopening for a short period in 2015. It later closed again and has remained vacant since.
21 En-Suite Bedrooms Planned
The converted building will provide 21 bedrooms.
Each bedroom is set to have its own en-suite facilities, meaning residents will have private bathroom space rather than shared bathrooms.
The plans also include shared facilities for people living in the building.
These include an indoor amenity room, which can be used as a communal space, along with a roof terrace.
A bicycle storage area is also included in the approved scheme.
Conditions Attached to Approval
The plans have been approved subject to conditions.
One of the conditions is that work must begin within three years of planning permission being granted.
Planning conditions are common on approved developments. They can cover timescales, building details, safety measures, drainage, materials and other matters linked to the final scheme.
Former Pub to Get New Use
The approval marks a new chapter for The Commercial after years of uncertainty.
Former pubs can be difficult buildings to bring back into use, especially when they have been empty for a long time.
The conversion will give the High Street property a new residential purpose and create accommodation in the centre of Cleator Moor.
It also means a vacant building will not continue to sit unused.
Further details about the timescale for the work have not yet been confirmed.
