Council Proposing New Parking Restrictions on Barrow Island
Westmorland and Furness Council is responding to complaints about parking in Barrow Island. Reports indicate that non-residents frequently misuse parking restrictions. The council is now proposing stricter measures to address these issues.
Background of the Complaints
Complaints have been received from councillors, businesses, and community groups. They highlight that many houses in Barrow Island lack off-street parking. This situation attracts non-resident car users, exacerbating parking problems.
Proposed Parking Changes
The council’s proposal includes resident-only parking at all times. Additionally, there would be limited parking for non-residents, allowing only one hour with no return within two hours. Permit holders would be exempt from these restrictions.
Consultation with Residents
The proposed changes followed consultations with local residents and users. Feedback indicated strong support for implementing these new parking restrictions.
Discussion at Locality Board Meeting
The proposals will be discussed at the Furness Locality Board meeting scheduled for April 8th. This meeting will also address parking issues on Greengate Street.
Greengate Street Parking Issues
Similar complaints have arisen regarding parking on Greengate Street. Current restrictions allow a maximum of two hours of free parking for non-permit holders. The council is proposing to reduce this limit to just 10 minutes, with no return within an hour.
Safety Improvements in Newbarns
In addition to parking changes, a one-way system is proposed for Rising Side and Stackwood Avenue. This initiative aims to improve road safety and reduce congestion near Newbarns Primary School.
Cost Estimates for Implementation
The estimated cost for staff resources and advertising related to the Traffic Regulation Order is £4,000. Implementation measures are expected to cost an additional £7,000.
