In July, 2026, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service underwent an inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS). The results showed that five out of eleven areas were rated as ‘good’, while six areas required improvement. This marks an improvement from the previous inspection in 2023, which identified serious concerns regarding the service’s efficiency.

The recent inspection highlighted 17 specific areas needing enhancement. These include reducing the backlog of home fire safety visits, monitoring of staff working hours, and confirming all staff have current fitness assessments.

Monitoring Progress

David Allen, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria, is overseeing the improvements. His office has published a report detailing the fire service’s progress, which is available on the Westmorland and Furness Council’s website.

The report indicates that significant progress has been made in addressing the identified areas for improvement. It states, “The work completed to date demonstrates a strong and sustained commitment to improvement across the organisation.”

Future Inspections

These advancements have positioned the service positively ahead of the next HMICFRS inspection, scheduled to begin in January 2027. Fieldwork for this inspection will commence as early as November this year.

Organising Improvements

The fire service is taking a structured approach to implement these improvements. Heads of departments have been appointed to lead initiatives in their respective areas. Additionally, the service is collaborating with other fire and rescue services, such as West Yorkshire, to enhance data monitoring practices.

Community Engagement

Westmorland and Furness Councillors are set to review the progress report at a meeting in Barrow Town Hall on April 20 at 10.30 am. This engagement reflects the service’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its improvement efforts.
