Fire crews carrying out evening training exercise in Barrow

Residents may have seen several fire engines and firefighters in Barrow town centre as crews take part in a planned training exercise.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service held the exercise at a property on Duke Street on Thursday, July 9.

It ran from around 6.30pm until 9.30pm and involved a number of fire service vehicles.

Why do firefighters hold exercises?

Training at real buildings allows firefighters to practise in a setting that is closer to an actual emergency.

Crews can test how they would enter and search a property, move equipment through restricted spaces and work safely alongside several other teams.

Exercises also give firefighters a chance to practise communication and decision-making under pressure. This can help crews prepare for fires and other incidents where a fast and organised response is needed.

Training helps crews prepare for real incidents

Firefighters complete regular training to keep their skills up to date.

This can include using hoses and ladders, searching smoke-filled buildings, rescuing casualties and wearing breathing equipment.

Crews also train together so firefighters from different stations can work effectively when several engines are called to the same incident.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service provides emergency cover across Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness. Its work includes responding to fires, road collisions, flooding and other rescue incidents.
