Cumbria Police conducted a significant operation resulting in 146 arrests as part of a nationwide campaign known as Operation Spotlight. This initiative focuses on the ‘fatal four’ driving offences: speeding, mobile phone use, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Of the arrests made, 71 were for drug driving and 52 for drink driving. The Roads Policing Unit led this operation, highlighting the dangers posed by impaired drivers.
Importance of Road Safety
Inspector Holly Lockwood of the Roads Policing Unit emphasised the risks associated with driving under the influence. She stated that such actions endanger not only the drivers but also all road users. The police aim to prevent serious accidents through their interventions.
Additional Operations
Alongside Operation Spotlight, Cumbria Police also initiated Operation Colossus. This operation targets anti-social driving and aims to enhance road safety in areas known for high traffic incidents.
Community Involvement
Inspector Lockwood encouraged community members to report any instances of unsafe driving. The police rely on public intelligence to identify and address dangerous behaviours on the roads.
Public Response
David Allen, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria, acknowledged that dangerous driving is a significant concern for residents. He expressed satisfaction with the proactive measures taken by the police to enforce road safety.
