Josh MacAlister, the MP for Whitehaven and Workington, has announced that Cumbria will gain 34 additional neighbourhood officers. This increase, which represents a rise of 2.36%, will bring the total number of police officers in the area to approximately 1,474. The new officers are part of a government initiative to add 13,000 officers nationwide.

Mr MacAlister highlighted that this boost in personnel will lead to more community patrols, enhanced action against anti-social behaviour, and ultimately safer neighbourhoods and high streets.

Government Initiative

The increase in officers is part of a broader strategy by the government aimed at improving public safety across the country. The initiative is designed to ensure that neighbourhoods have a visible police presence. Which is essential for community trust and security.

Impact on Local Communities

With more officers on the streets, residents can expect increased visibility and quicker responses to incidents. Mr MacAlister expressed optimism about the positive changes this will bring to West Cumbria. Stating that he will continue to work closely with local officials to ensure effective policing.

Current Police Force Structure

A recent Freedom of Information request revealed that there are currently 52 fully qualified officers in the police control room in Penrith. This represents 3.61% of the total police force in Cumbria. The control room has been managing calls since 2016. A shift prompted by budget cuts and the need to alleviate pressure on frontline officers.

Fitness Development Plans

It was also disclosed that 20 officers are on fitness development plans due to not passing their Job Related Fitness Test. These officers are restricted from frontline duties until they meet the necessary fitness standards. Factors such as injuries or mental health issues can impact their ability to pass the test.

Conclusion

The addition of new officers to Cumbria’s police force is a significant step towards enhancing community safety. While challenges remain, this increase is seen as a positive development for local residents.
