The Cumbria Pride charity has announced the cancellation of its event scheduled for May 17th at Box Arena. This decision was influenced by several factors. Including changes to the event format, low ticket sales, and a lack of volunteer support.
Organisers stated that ensuring the viability and sustainability of future events is crucial.
Reasons for Cancellation
According to a spokesperson, the choice to cancel was not made lightly. The combination of reduced ticket uptake and volunteer capacity led to this difficult decision. As a volunteer-led organisation, Cumbria Pride prioritises delivering events that are both feasible and sustainable.
Community Response
The cancellation has understandably disappointed many within the local community. However, organisers are exploring the possibility of hosting a smaller social event for adults on the same evening. Updates regarding this and other future events will be shared through their website and social media channels.
Future Plans for Cumbria Pride
Despite this setback, Cumbria Pride is moving forward with plans for the 2026 event, which is set for September 26th. This will include an all-ages afternoon show featuring local performers, followed by an over-18s afterparty.
Community Engagement Initiatives
In collaboration with Cumberland Council, Cumbria Pride is also planning to set up LGBT+ information stalls in Carlisle city centre. These stalls aim to enhance visibility and provide support from local organisations.
Volunteer Opportunities
Cumbria Pride relies entirely on volunteers and community support. They invite anyone interested in contributing to reach out via email. The charity is also funded through sponsorships and donations, with all funds reinvested to support the LGBT+ community in Cumbria.
Youth-Focused Events
Additionally, Cumbria Pride is working on a youth-oriented event called “Connect with Pride,” set to take place later this year. Funded by BBC Children in Need, these sessions will offer a safe space for under-18s to connect and receive support.
