Cumbria named UK running hotspot as popularity of run clubs surges
Cumbria is now one of the UK’s leading locations for running. With new data highlighting the county as a hotspot for run clubs.
Research from clothing brand Jacamo shows that Cumbria has the highest concentration of running clubs in the country. Reflecting a growing trend in group fitness and community-based exercise.
Cumbria tops the rankings
The study found that Cumbria has around 8.8 running clubs per 100,000 people. Placing it ahead of other counties across the UK.
The area also benefits from a strong network of organised events. Including multiple Park Runs and junior running groups, helping to support runners of all ages and abilities.
Other counties performing well include Surrey, Oxfordshire and Essex, but Cumbria stood out for its particularly high concentration of clubs relative to population size.
Growing demand for run clubs
The findings come as interest in running clubs continues to rise across the UK.
Search data shows that:
- Interest in “run clubs” has increased significantly in the past year
- Social media and fitness apps are driving participation
- More beginners are joining local groups
Running remains one of the most popular forms of exercise, with many people turning to clubs for motivation, structure and social connection.
More than just fitness
Experts say the appeal of run clubs goes beyond physical health.
Group running can:
- Help people stay consistent with exercise
- Provide a sense of community
- Improve mental wellbeing
- Encourage social interaction
For many, joining a local running group offers both fitness benefits and a way to connect with others in their area.
A strong local running culture
Cumbria’s outdoor environment and established running scene are likely contributing factors to its ranking.
With access to scenic routes, parks and organised events, the county continues to attract both experienced runners and those new to the sport.
As interest in running continues to grow nationwide, Cumbria appears well placed to remain one of the UK’s key hubs for community running
