Cumbria Speed Camera Vans Revealed as Past Checks Catch Drivers at Extreme Speeds
Cumbria Police have revealed figures showing some motorists in the county being caught at shockingly high speeds.
Among the most serious cases, one driver was recorded travelling at 121mph in a 40mph roadworks section of the M6. Another was caught at 79mph in a 30mph zone elsewhere in the county.
The figures highlight the scale of speeding offences being detected across Cumbria as police continue road safety checks in towns and villages.
Highest Speeds Recorded
The highest speed recorded was 121mph. Logged in a 40mph roadworks area on the M6.
Elsewhere, the highest speed detected in a 30mph zone was 79mph.
Other top recorded speeds included:
-
68mph in Carlisle
-
45mph in Workington
-
80mph in Whitehaven
The figures show that while many drivers may only be slightly over the limit, some are being caught at speeds far beyond what is considered safe.
Serious Safety Concerns
The highest speeds recorded are likely to raise concern, particularly in lower-speed areas and roadworks sections where risks are greater.
Driving at 121mph in a 40mph zone or 79mph in a 30mph area is not just a minor speeding offence. Speeds at that level greatly increase stopping distances and the likelihood of a serious or fatal collision.
Police continue to urge motorists to respect speed limits and slow down, especially in built-up areas and temporary roadwork zones.
