Barrow Man Denies Online Sexual Communication with Minors

Carlisle magistrates crown Court

Michael Creighton, a 51 year old former resident of Barrow, is currently on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. He faces five allegations of attempting to engage in sexual communication with minors. The accusations stem from messages sent over a seven-month period, from November 2023 to May 2024, via his Facebook account.

The individuals involved were actually adult decoys, part of a vigilante group aimed at confronting suspected paedophiles. Following their actions, they reported Creighton to the police.

Defendant’s Testimony

During his testimony, Creighton denied sending the messages found on his phone after his arrest. He claimed that a woman he had previously met had access to his phone and Facebook account, alleging she had stolen it.

Allegations of Assault

Creighton described an incident where this woman confronted him at a local Wetherspoons pub just days before his birthday. He claimed she attacked him with a barstool, resulting in a chipped tooth and broken ribs.

Views on Vigilante Groups

When questioned about his thoughts on vigilante paedophile hunter groups, Creighton expressed support, stating he has strong morals. He acknowledged that the woman who assaulted him seemed to have a motive for her actions.

Prosecution’s Case

Prosecutor Lucy Moran pressed Creighton about the nature of the messages he allegedly sent to the decoys. Creighton described the content as horrific and insisted he would never communicate with a 13-year-old in such a manner.

Closing Remarks and Jury Deliberation

With all evidence presented, the jury has now retired to deliberate on the case. They will continue their discussions today to reach a verdict.
