William Wrigley, a 19-year-old from St Bees, is preparing to sail from Seattle back to the UK. He is participating in the final stages of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. This unique race allows individuals without prior sailing experience to train and compete as ocean racers.

Inspiration to Sail

Wrigley’s journey began a couple of years ago in Oban, Scotland. While cycling across the Outer Hebrides with his father, they encountered the Clipper Race fleet. Intrigued, Wrigley picked up a leaflet about the race and decided he wanted to participate.

Changing Plans

Initially, Wrigley planned to use his gap year to obtain a professional yachting qualification. However, a visit to the Southampton Boat Show changed his course. Seeing a Clipper Race boat in person inspired him to pursue this opportunity.

Intensive Training

To prepare for the race, participants must complete four levels of intensive training at the Clipper Race headquarters in Portsmouth. This training equips crew members to handle various conditions at sea, including storms and daily life aboard the yacht.

Life on Board

Wrigley shared that cooking for a large crew was a significant challenge during training. Despite being the youngest member of the crew, he feels comfortable and connected with his teammates. The shared goal of completing the race fosters camaraderie among the participants.

Upcoming Race Details

Wrigley will join the London Business School yacht in Seattle before setting off for Panama on April 28th. The race will continue to Washington DC, then to Oban, and finally conclude in Portsmouth. The final placements will be announced on July 25th.
