Cumbria’s Most Popular Baby Names in Recent Years

The most popular baby names across Cumbria have been revealed, with local favourites changing considerably between 2024 and 2025.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show the leading boys’ and girls’ names in Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness. The data is based on the mother’s usual area of residence rather than the hospital where the baby was born.

The ONS publishes the most popular name in each council area. It does not provide a complete ranking for Cumbria as a whole, so we have compared the results from both of the county’s local authority areas.

Most Popular Girls’ Names in Cumbria

Local parents chose a different leading girls’ name in each area and year.

2024CumberlandAmelia28

Evie became Cumberland’s most popular girls’ name in 2025, replacing Amelia, which had led the local list one year earlier.

In Westmorland and Furness, Elsie took the top spot in 2025. Sophie had been the most popular choice in the area during 2024.

The figures suggest that traditional names with a softer and more familiar sound remain popular with Cumbrian parents. However, no girls’ name managed to hold on to first place across the two years.

Most Popular Boys’ Names in Cumbria

The leading boys’ names also changed in both areas between 2024 and 2025.

Arthur was the leading boys’ name in Cumberland during 2025, with 26 babies receiving the name. Harry had topped the area’s list in 2024.

Over in Westmorland and Furness, Freddie rose to first place in 2025. Oliver had been the clear favourite during the previous year, when 35 babies were given the name.

Once again, classic names proved popular. Arthur, Freddie, Harry and Oliver have all remained familiar choices while continuing to feel suitable for a new generation.

How Does Cumbria Compare With the National List?

Cumbria’s favourites did not always match the leading names across England and Wales.

In 2025, Olivia remained the most popular girls’ name nationally. It was followed by Lily, Amelia, Isla and Florence. Muhammad held first place for boys, ahead of Noah, Leo, Luca and Arthur.

Olivia and Muhammad had also led the national lists in 2024. However, none of the locally popular girls’ names from Cumbria reached number one across England and Wales during either year.

Arthur came closest among the boys. It ranked fourth nationally in 2024 and fifth in 2025, while also becoming the most popular boys’ name in Cumberland.

The latest figures were released by the Office for National Statistics in July 2026. The full datasets for girls’ names and boys’ names also include national rankings and comparisons with previous years.

Some of Our Favourite Girls’ Names

Looking beyond the local winners, these are a few of our favourite girls’ names from the national top 100 for 2025:

  • Mabel – a warm, traditional name that has returned to fashion.
  • Maeve – short, distinctive and easy to remember.
  • Orla – a bright name that feels familiar without being too common.
  • Robyn – a lovely nature-linked choice which works throughout the year.
  • Marnie – cheerful, unusual and still outside the most common names.

Some of Our Favourite Boys’ Names

Our favourite boys’ names include a mix of classic and slightly less common choices:

  • Rowan – a strong nature-inspired name with a lovely Cumbrian feel.
  • Reuben – traditional, friendly and full of character.
  • Rory – short, lively and easy to pronounce.
  • Jasper – a classic name that still feels distinctive.
  • Otis – an unusual choice which has become more popular in recent years.

Baby-name trends can change quickly, but Cumbria’s latest results show that classic choices are far from disappearing. Evie, Elsie, Arthur and Freddie all have a traditional feel, while still sounding at home in 2026.

Did your child’s name make the list, or is there another Cumbrian favourite you think deserves a mention?
