Dalton Leisure Centre has clarified that it remains open as normal despite the closure of Chapel Street, where it is located. The street is closed from April 1st to April 10th for roadworks, causing some confusion due to ‘road closed’ signs.
The leisure centre emphasised that all sessions, including gym, swimming, and classes, are continuing without interruption.
Road Closure Details
Chapel Street is closed for approximately 435 metres from its junction with Hope Street. The closure is part of council roadworks managed by Westmorland and Furness Council.
Although ‘road closed’ signs are in place, the council has assured that access to Dalton Leisure Centre will be maintained at all times. Only one side of the entrance from Chapel Street is closed at any time, and the works progress in sections.
Impact on Access and Confusion
The leisure centre expressed frustration over the lack of clear signage indicating that it remains open. The ‘road closed’ signs have led to misunderstandings that the facility is shut.
A spokesperson said that there is no signage to inform visitors that the business is still operating, which has caused confusion among patrons.
Alternative Routes and Diversions
A diversion route is in place to help motorists navigate around the closure. The diversion uses the open section of Chapel Street along with Broughton Road, Market Street, Skelgate, and Myrtle Terrace.
This ensures that visitors can still reach the leisure centre despite the roadworks.
Council’s Position
The council had previously stated that access to the leisure centre would be maintained throughout the roadworks. They confirmed that the full closure of Chapel Street would not occur all at once but in sections to minimise disruption.
The leisure centre had raised concerns about the closure dates and impact prior to the start of the works.
