Dalton Road Set to Close for Up to Three Months
A rural road near Dalton-in-Furness is set to close from Monday, August 24, while highway work is carried out.
The closure will affect the U5131 between Greystone Lane and Stone Barrow Lane. Restrictions are expected to be required for up to three months, although the road will only close when official signs are displayed.
Drivers who use the route should allow extra time and follow the signed diversion.
Which Section of the Road Will Close?
The restriction covers the U5131 from its junction with Greystone Lane. It continues north-east to the junction with Stone Barrow Lane.
Vehicles will not be allowed to travel along the affected section while the closure is active.
The temporary order also applies to pedestrians and cyclists. However, Westmorland and Furness Council says access will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists who dismount.
Diversion Route for Drivers
A signed diversion will take motorists along:
- Greystone Lane
- The C5032
- Stone Barrow Lane
Temporary signs will be placed around the area to direct traffic. Motorists should follow these signs and avoid attempting to travel through the closed section.
Access arrangements may vary as the work progresses. Residents are expected to receive more information about individual closures nearer the time.
Closure Linked to Highway Work
The restriction is being introduced to allow highway work to be completed safely.
The legal order comes into force on August 24 and can remain valid for up to 18 months. However, this does not mean the road will stay closed throughout that period.
The council expects the restrictions covered by the order to be needed for around three months. Each road will only close when required and when the relevant traffic signs are in place.
Exact working dates for the U5131 have not been confirmed in the public notice.

The Dalton-in-Furness closure forms part of a wider temporary traffic order covering five locations across the Barrow and Furness area.
Other roads included in the order are:
- Lord Roberts Back Street on Walney
- Roose Road Back Street in Barrow
- Whitehead Street Back Street in Barrow
- Ramsden Street Back Street and Church Street Back Street in Barrow
The individual restrictions will not necessarily begin at the same time. Residents and road users will be told when each closure is due to take place.
