BAE Systems has been granted permission to demolish the old air traffic control tower and hangar at Walney Aerodrome. This decision by Westmorland and Furness Council was made on June 25, following an application submitted in April. The demolition is deemed urgent for safety reasons, as the existing structures obstruct vital sightlines for air traffic control.

Background of the Aerodrome

Walney Aerodrome has been in operation for many years. In recent years, a new control tower and associated facilities were built to comply with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) standards. The old structures, dating back to the 1940s, have become increasingly problematic.

Reasons for Demolition

The primary reason for the demolition is safety. The old tower and hangar obstruct the line of sight required for the flight information service officer (FISO) to monitor operations effectively. This obstruction has been noted in CAA inspections over the past seven years.

Condition of Existing Structures

In addition to safety concerns, the age and deteriorating condition of the buildings have raised alarms. There is a confirmed presence of asbestos, which poses an additional health hazard. The removal of these structures is seen as necessary to mitigate these risks.

Demolition Plans

The demolition process will involve several steps. First, materials containing asbestos will be safely removed. Following this, the buildings will be demolished, including the air traffic control tower substructure and associated car parking area. Finally, the site will be restored with topsoil, turf, and fencing.

Regulatory Approval

The council planner overseeing the case agreed that the continued presence of the old structures posed an increasing hazard. The demolition has been classified as permitted development, allowing BAE to proceed without further regulatory hurdles.

Future of Walney Aerodrome

With the new control tower operational and the old structures set for demolition, Walney Aerodrome is moving towards a safer and more efficient future. This decision marks a significant step in ensuring the ongoing safety of air operations in the area.
