Section of Devonshire Road in Barrow to Close for Three Weeks

A section of Devonshire Road in Barrow is set to close for around three weeks while utility work is carried out.

The closure is due to begin on Monday, August 3, and is expected to remain in place until approximately Monday, August 24.

Vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will be unable to use the affected section while the work is underway.

Which Part of Devonshire Road Will Close?

The closure will affect a section of Devonshire Road from its junction with the U6150.

It will extend for around 65 metres in a south-westerly direction.

Temporary signs and barriers will be placed around the work area when the restriction is active.

When Will the Closure Begin?

The temporary order will come into operation on August 3, 2026.

Although the legal order can remain in force for up to 18 months, the council expects the actual closure to be required for only three weeks.

The restriction will apply only when the relevant traffic signs are displayed.

Key details include:

  • Road affected: Devonshire Road, Barrow-in-Furness
  • Closure begins: Monday, August 3
  • Expected duration: Around three weeks
  • Estimated completion: Monday, August 24
  • Reason: Utility works
  • Access affected: Vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists

What Is the Diversion Route?

A signed diversion will take road users along:

  • The unrestricted section of Devonshire Road
  • Walney Road and the A590
  • The U6304
  • Park Road
  • Schneider Road
  • The U6150

Drivers travelling through the area should allow additional time and follow the temporary signs.

Pedestrians and Cyclists Also Affected

Unlike some temporary road closures, the order prohibits all traffic from using the affected section.

This includes vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. People who normally walk or cycle along Devonshire Road will therefore need to follow the alternative route while work takes place.

Drivers Advised to Plan Ahead

The closure may cause extra traffic on nearby roads, including Walney Road, Park Road and Schneider Road.

Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys before the restriction begins and leave extra time when travelling through the area.

Anyone with questions about the closure can contact the Westmorland and Furness Council Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3306, quoting reference TTROW/18510.
