Three-week closure planned for Devonshire Road in Barrow
A section of Devonshire Road in Barrow is due to close for around three weeks while utility work takes place.
The restriction is expected to begin on Monday, August 3, and remain in place until around Monday, August 24.
The closure will affect vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. A signed diversion will be available throughout the work.
Which part of Devonshire Road will close?
The restriction will cover a section of Devonshire Road from its junction with the U6150.
It will continue in a south-westerly direction for around 65 metres.
Westmorland and Furness Council said the closure is needed to allow utility work to be carried out safely. The public notice does not state which utility company is completing the work or give further details about the project.
Diversion route confirmed
A signed alternative route will be available using:
Devonshire Road, Walney Road, Park Road, Schneider Road and the U6150.
The diversion includes part of the A590 and may add extra time to journeys through the area.
Drivers should follow the temporary signs rather than relying solely on their usual route or satellite navigation.
Pedestrians and cyclists also affected
The order prohibits all traffic from using the closed section. This includes motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
People who normally walk or cycle along Devonshire Road will therefore need to follow the signed alternative route while the restriction is active.
Access arrangements may depend on the position of the work and the signs displayed at the time.
Closure expected to last three weeks
The temporary traffic order can legally remain in force for up to 18 months.
However, this does not mean Devonshire Road will remain closed for that full period. The council expects the restriction to be needed for around three weeks and only while the correct traffic signs are displayed.
The current dates are:
Expected start: August 3, 2026
Estimated finish: August 24, 2026
Roadwork dates can change if contractors face delays or unexpected problems below ground.
