Cumbrian Donkey Sanctuary Appeals for Help After Eight Animals Abandoned Since Christmas
A Cumbrian donkey sanctuary has launched an urgent appeal for support after eight more donkeys were abandoned at its gates since Christmas.
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat, based in Shap, is caring for the animals and working to restore them to health. The sanctuary says donkeys are often neglected or discarded when they are no longer needed, leaving rescue centres to deal with the consequences.
Caring for Neglected Donkeys
Many of the newly arrived donkeys have been suffering from serious health issues linked to neglect. Some have arrived severely underweight, while others have had dramatically overgrown hooves or advanced skin conditions. Dental disease has also been common, which can make it difficult for the animals to eat properly.
Veterinary examinations have revealed a range of problems, including hoof conditions such as laminitis and underlying illnesses such as liver disease. Several donkeys require intensive care, including box rest and ongoing treatment while their conditions improve.
The recent influx of animals has placed additional pressure on the sanctuary, particularly on its available shelter space. Extra stabling is especially important for donkeys suffering from painful hoof conditions that require rest while inflammation settles.
A Sanctuary Run by Volunteers
Barnhill Donkeys Retreat has been operating since 2003 and has rescued and rehomed more than 300 donkeys. The sanctuary is run entirely by volunteers who care for the animals and carry out much of the organisation’s community outreach work.
School groups and local organisations regularly visit the retreat, where visitors are able to meet the donkeys and learn more about their care and welfare.
Ongoing Costs and Support Needed
Caring for the donkeys comes with significant weekly costs. Bedding costs around £105 per week, feed costs just over £200, and veterinary and farrier care typically ranges from £200 to £400 each week.
With the recent increase in rescued animals, the sanctuary is appealing for donations and support to help cover these costs and continue its work rehabilitating neglected donkeys.
Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, the team at Barnhill Donkeys Retreat remains committed to giving these animals a safe place to recover. With continued public support, the sanctuary hopes to restore the health and wellbeing of the newly rescued donkeys and provide them with a secure future.
