Driver fails cocaine test one day after taking driving test
A driver was arrested near Kendal after failing a roadside drug test just one day after taking their driving test.
Cumbria Police said officers stopped the vehicle last week because they were concerned about the way it was being driven.
The driver was then asked to complete a roadside drug wipe. It returned a positive result for cocaine.
Driver released while police await blood results
The man was arrested following the positive roadside test.
He was later released under investigation while officers wait for the results of a blood test.
Those results will help determine whether any further action is taken.
Stop formed part of national road safety operation
The arrest happened during the first week of Operation Spotlight.
The national campaign focuses on four major causes of serious and fatal collisions, often known as the “Fatal Four”.
These are speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
Cumbria Police said its previous operation led to more than 140 drivers being arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-driving offences.
Police have not released the driver’s age or confirmed whether they had passed the driving test taken the previous day.
